Megan Noël -- The Postcard Project

A friend of mine is having a hard time. Sometimes there is really nothing you can do to help someone other than letting them know you love them and are thinking of them. So I decided to send a postcard every day. This inspired me to experiment with different mediums and techniques. Thank you to all of the artists on the Artistsjournals Yahoogroups list for generously sharing tips & techniques. Below are the postcards from The Postcard Project, which is still in progress. I still send postcards to my friend, but I also send them to others.

This Page is updated often!

watercolorsThis is a watercolor postcard. I cut slits in the paper and painted it with watercolors, metallic watercolors, and gold drawing ink. I created texture and effects using salt and rubbing alcohol. I cut a smaller piece of watercolor paper into a shape I liked, painted it with gold metallic ink, and inserted it through the slits I had cut.
Turtle Press StampsThis postcard was done on black recycled cardstock. I colored with Prismacolors and gel pens. The stamps are all from Turtle Press with black Fabrico ink. It acts as a slight resist, and then I colored around it. I coated the entire thing with Dorlands Wax.
Feral AngelThis is an altered postcard. I painted the postcard with black gesso, then drew the angel with oil pastels. I created texture by scraping away pigment with an old ballpoint pen and painted the background with copper lumiere. I sealed the postcard with acrylic gel medium.
Madonna Post CardThis is an altered postcard. I painted the postcard with black gesso, and collaged using acrylic gel medium as a glue and a seal. I also added red gouache and copper lumiere paint. The central Madonna is a colorcopy of a watercolor painting I did. The Raven Goddess is a stamp (which I drew on top of) by Turtle Press.
Scarlet SirenThis is an altered postcard. I painted the postcard with black gesso, then drew the woman using oil pastels. I created texture using an old ball point pen, and covered the drawing with acrylic gel medium. I then dabbed on some silver lumiere paint.
Digitally Altered Photo PostcardI scanned a photo and digitally manipulated it in photoshop using various effects. I then printed the images out, adhered to cardstock, and painted around the photos with copper lumiere paint.
Veiled AngelsI laid down a layer of black gesso, collaged over it with angel pictures and layers of tissue using acrylic gel medium as a glue and sealer, scraped away some layers of tissue, resealed, and dabbed copper lumiere on the edges.
Blue Lace PostcardFirst I laid down 2 layers of white gesso and sanded in between layers. Then I layered small pieces of tissue using matte acrylic gel medium as a glue and a seal. Then I laid down torn pieces of paper lace in the same manner. Lastly I sealed with more acrylic gel medium.
Collage under tissueThis is a collage under white tissue paper. I did the collage very quickly, using whatever came to hand. I used acrylic gel medium as a glue and to seal the collage. Then I laid down another coat of acrylic gel medium over the whole postcard and adhered a sheet of white tissue to that and coated the tissue with 2 layers of acrylic gel medium.
Angels under TissueThis is an altered postcard. I can not remember who the original artist was, and I have now obscured the caption on the back. I laid down many small pieces of tissue with acrylic gel medium around the angels and covered with more acrylic gel medium. Then I did a layer of gel medium over the whole surface and covered with a piece of white tissue and more gel medium, to which I had added powdered pearls.
Veiled BaalThis is an extremely altered postcard. I painted the postcard with white gesso, and used acrylic gel medium to glue down a color copy. I covered the copy and the edges with layers of tissue, adhered with tinted acrylic gel medium. Also there is a dried leaf caught in the layers. I finished the card by painting the edges with copper lumiere and layering on more acrylic gel medium. I sprayed with fixative last. The gel medium was tinted with sepia & yellow ochre drawing inks.
Junius This is an altered postcard of "Sketch for the Allegory Junius" by Gustav Klimt. I layered tissue paper onto the postcard using acrylic gel medium & sealed it with more gel medium.
Winged Heart This is an altered postcard. I put black gesso over the card and then drew the design in oil pastels. I coated the pastels with acrylic matte gel medium and also used the gel medium to affix some paper hearts. The gel was tinted with yellow ochre drawing ink, which gave the piece an antique look. I sprayed the whole thing with workable fixative. The back is watercolor and yellow ochre drawing ink, dabbed on, with collaged words. (I printed out a lot of words a few months ago on address labels, which I cut apart. Since I had forgotten what words I had done there was an element of spontaneity to what I "wrote."
Lost Postcard This is another heavily altered postcard. I painted the surface with black gesso, then dabbed on acrylic paint. I collaged using painted puzzle pieces, magazine clippings, vintage photos, and a cardboard slide mount. I coated with acrylic gel medium, and dabbed on some copper lumiere & drawing ink. I painted the back with yellow ochre drawing ink and wrote the text on vintage paper scraps. I sprayed the whole thing with workable fixative. I added extra postage to this one. Remember to use extra postage if you are adding 3D elements to your postcard.
Leaves Postcard
This is an altered free postcard. (Admittedly, I altered it beyond recognition.) I covered most of it with black gesso, then layered on copper & silver lumiere & matte acrylic gel medium. Those are real leaves, and a picture I found in a book.
New Moon Postcard
This is an altered postcard. Also altered beyond recognition. It was thick paper with a matte coating. I covered with black gesso and then did an oil pastel drawing on top and did some texturing with the edge of a bone folding tool. I covered the pastels with layers of matte acrylic gel medium & some silver lumiere paint. I finished off with workable fixative.
