Hope is the most supreme form of defiance. We must learn the comforts of haziness & be at rest beneath veils of fog

Doll Stands

Independent Book Store

Fremont Place Book Co.

Megan Noel's favorite place to buy books. Did you know that your local independent book store can order most books for you in a day or two? Sometimes the big faceless on-line bookstores have better "deals" but then you have to pay shipping! Also isn't it nice to know you are supporting your community? & Isn't it a lot more fun to broose a lovely little shop than a great big website? FPB has a frequent buyers club, too! All that and they know my name WITHOUT having to put cookies on my computer. What more could you ask for?

Fiction to disassemble your worldview via:

First you should know, I love to read. All kinds of books. But here I have only listed the sorts of books that make you stop and scrabble frantically for a pencil to take notes and write things down, the sort of books that contain scentences so beautiful you want to write them down or memorize them. Lots of books are fun to read, but what I really love is to read a book that is well written, each word lovingly set into place.

Points for a Compass Rose by Evan S. Connell (poetry)
Notes from a Bottle Found on the Beach at Carmel by Evan S. Connell (Poetry)
Evan S. Connell tells the history of the world in disjointed order within these two books which comprise a long prose-poem.

Other poets I enjoy are ee cummings, Leonard Cohen & Emily Dickinson, to name a few.

Views from the Oldest House by Richard Grant
My favorite book of all time, a story of archetypes set at the end of modern civilization, when all the old stories start repeating themselves (as old stories do) but with surreal twists...

See Under: Love by David Grossman
The Book of Intimate Grammer by David Grossman
David Grossman is one is Israel's major modern writers. I find his work original and moving.

Sweet Days of Disclipline by Fleur Jaeggy
A very unusual book translated from French and set in Switzerland. The style is sparce and haunting.

Saudade by Katherine Vaz
Portuguese magical realism. The language is lush and original, very sensual and feminine.

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter
fairy tales that Grimms never expected.
